A Review of The Grumpy Growlies By Christian Lowthet
How do you deal with anger? How do you deal with an angry child? As a parent, I struggle with both of those questions. I don’t want to be so angry with my kids that I exasperate them or so angry with someone else that I set a poor example. When they are mad, I do not want them to deny their feelings but to appropriately handle the anger. When they display their anger inappropriately, I want them to sincerely regret it and apologize to the one they hurt. I hope to accomplish that, but how to achieve it is a struggle. Books can be one tool in my shed that I can use. There are books like Daniel Tiger’s “I’m feeling mad” which can be helpful to teach about being angry in appropriate ways. Now there’s “The Grumpy Growlies” by Christina Lowther which will teach children what to do when they are inappropriate with their anger.
In a sing-song way, the writer teaches the importance of changing your anger to more pleasant emotions and apologies to the one you hurt. It’s a simple message presented in a fun way. I read it to my daughters, who are 8 and 7. The 7-year-old gave it thumbs up. The 8-year-old gave a thumbs down. I can understand why the older child didn’t like it. She’s reading chapter books now, and this was beyond her age. She struggles with anger, but the lesson is too simple for her. The younger child still likes picture books and so enjoys them more. As a parent, I appreciate the lessons it presents. If this book were available when my children were younger, I would want to read it to them. I recommend this book to parents with kids who are not reading or learning. It’s a simple way to teach dealing with anger.
