A cold wind blows through my walls.
The naked and exposed rush quickly by.
Inside are empty chairs in empty halls.
No one takes refuge or comes in me to lie.
A century ago it was not this way.
Songs filled my heart with pleasure.
Clothed in their best every Sunday,
They’d come and respect the Day of Leisure.
With parasols and hats they came,
In vest, bow tie and woolen frock,
Come winter snow or spring rain,
They’d ascend at the sound of the bell clock.
Worshipers entered inside of me.
In quiet reverence and respect,
With bowed head and bended knee.
Upon the word and message they’d reflect.
Pious ladies were courted by devout men.
The father chaperoned young pairs.
Vows were sealed with an amen.
Marriages sustained through fervent prayers.
She was a soul of undesirable gain.
He was a man of wealth and position.
Love between them was their bane.
In secret, they met of their own volition.
A stormy east-wind blew.
The pale woods whispered shame.
In the little ones, a deadly fever broke out.
Evil sin was feared the blame
Their love was betrayed by a friend
Who exposed their adulterous affair.
Death was anticipated to be their end.
Before the magistrate their sins were laid bare.
But at the closing of the day
The blanket grace warmly covers.
The redeemer bore their sins far away.
Judgment freed the exposed lovers.
In chambered walls of my heart
Lies forgiveness for the greatest sin.
Lovers wed in me will never part
When two souls are bound within.
Now lovers lie asleep in the ground.
I am neglected and forgotten long ago.
No faithful worshiper comes around.
Within my walls will fire ever glow?
